Sombra Abilities

Sombra Machine Pistol ability

Machine Pistol

Short-range automatic weapon.

Hack

Hold to hack. Hacked enemies cannot use abilities and can be seen through walls. Hacked health packs spawn faster and can't be used by enemies. Taking damage interrupts the hack attempt.

Sombra Stealth ability

Stealth

When out of combat, become invisible and move faster.

Sombra Translocator ability

Translocator

Throw a beacon and teleport to it. Stealth cooldown is reduced after teleporting.

Sombra Virus ability

Virus

Infect enemies with a projectile that deals damage over time. Virus damages hacked enemies at a faster rate.

Sombra EMP ability

EMP

Deal damage to all nearby enemies equal to a percentage of their current health, hacking them and destroying barriers around you.

Sombra Difficulty - Medium

Relative to all Overwatch 2 heroes, Sombra is Medium difficulty to be effective with.

Sombra Tier Rating - S-tier

We rate Sombra as a S-tier Damage hero in the current Overwatch 2 meta (among possible tiers of S, A, B, C, and D).

Whenever we discuss counters for Overwatch 2 Heroes, Sombra is essentially always on the list (often first). Her Hack prevents hacked enemies from using their abilities, usually leaving them as easy targets for her and her team.

Sombra is a nightmare for nearly any Hero caught alone. She can sneak up on them in Stealth mode, infect them with Virus, and often finish them off with her Machine Pistol. Without great reactions and/or excellent aim, many Heroes are screwed against this combo if their team doesn't peel for them. When things don't go Sombra's way, she has her Translocator to teleport away from enemies safely.

Sombra is most often used as a dive hero, but she's also useful for playing more passively and hacking diving enemies. She's a great pick against most team compositions and fits well with most team compositions.

Sombra Tips

  • As a Sombra player, it's crucial to master the combo of hacking an enemy, hitting them with her Virus ability, and finishing them off with her Machine Pistol.

Sombra Counters

Sombra is an incredibly strong hero in the current Overwatch 2 meta. Her Hack, Virus, and Machine Pistol combo can help her win a 1v1 against almost any non-Tank hero.

It's probably impossible to prevent a good Sombra player from being effective at the moment, but these Sombra counters are your best bet:

Torbjörn

Torbjörn

Like Tracer, Torbjörn's Turret can damage Sombra when she attacks your team's backline. However, it's not as effective as against Tracer because the Turret can't shoot Sombra when she's Stealth.

In 1v1 scenarios, Torbjörn can deal a lot of damage up close, and his Overload ability helps keep him alive if he's not killed by Sombra during her hack on him.

Symmetra

Symmetra

One way to combat Sombra is to go full "cheese mode" with a beefy team composition and turrets. Symmetra's Sentry Turrets placed near players an enemy Sombra is attacking can distract her and deal enough damage to force her to Translocate. Pair this with Torbjörn's Turret, and that's a lot of auto-aim damage.

Soldier: 76

Soldier: 76

Soldier: 76 isn't necessarily a full-blown counter to Sombra, but he can fare decently against her in a 1v1 and help his supports.

In a 1v1, if you're not killed during the duration of her hack, you can use your Biotic Field to start healing yourself. While you might still struggle in 1v1s, playing as Soldier near your Supports can be an effective way to stay alive if she solo-dives you. If she hacks you, your Supports can keep you alive until you're able to use Biotic Field. If she instead hacks one of your supports, you can drop Biotic Field for them and deal a lot of burst damage to her with your Helix Rockets.

Like other medium to long-range heroes, Solider will also out-damage an enemy Sombra if she's playing more passively and further away from your team.

Sombra

Sombra

Hacking an enemy Sombra while playing Sombra yourself leaves her as an incredibly vulnerable target.

If you're playing Sombra against Sombra, just make sure to balance your time effectively between playing counter-dive and going after enemies yourself.

Brigitte

Brigitte

While Brigitte is less of a counter to Sombra now that her Shield Bash only stuns enemies during her Rally Ultimate, she's still a very viable pick.

With 200 health and 50 armor, Brig is likely to be able to stay alive long enough while hacked to regain her abilities. Typically, Sombras like to attack enemies from close, likely leaving them in range of Brig's Rocket Flail.

You can use Brigitte's Shield to protect yourself and your teammates when not hacked and use Whip Shot and Shield Bash to knock Sombra further away where her Machine Pistol is less effective.

Kiriko

Kiriko

Kiriko's most significant advantage when the enemy team has a Sombra is that Kiri's Suzu can cleanse hacked enemies of the hack. This includes cleansing EMP'd enemies, assuming you manage to avoid the EMP as Kiriko.

Playing as Kiriko, if a Sombra attacks you, you can use Swift Step to teleport if you stay alive until after the hack wears off.
